1. Join U.S. Ski & Snowboard as an Alpine Official

Get connected to the national officials program and begin your officials education and experience.

2. Connect with Your Local Ski Club

Let your local Alaska ski club or race organizer know you’re interested in helping at an upcoming race. They can help connect you with the right race-day opportunity.

3. Get Involved on Race Day

Start in an entry-level race-day role and learn alongside experienced officials. There are many ways to jump in and help, including:

Gate Judge
Start Assistant
Finish Support
Course Crew
Other race-day positions

Many of these positions require no prior experience. Show up, lend a hand, and learn as you go — experienced officials will help you get started.

4. Build Your Experience

Learn, grow, and take on more at your own pace. Continue developing your skills through on-hill experience, clinics, and officials education, with opportunities to pursue additional certifications and greater responsibility as you go.

Who Can Become an Official?

Anyone! You don’t need to be an expert skier—or a former racer.

There is no single path to becoming an Alpine Official. Our officials come from all parts of the ski community.
We welcome:

Parents who want to be more involved in their athlete’s experience
Former racers who want to stay connected to the sport
Coaches and ski instructors who want to contribute in a different role
Volunteers who enjoy being part of race-day operations
Ski enthusiasts who want to learn more about racing and give back
Community members who enjoy working with people, being outside, and being part of a team

Why Become an Official?

Being an official gives you a different perspective on race day and a chance to become more deeply involved in the sport.

As an official, you can:

Be part of the action — Get closer to race day and see how competitions really work.
Support young athletes — Help create safe, fair and fun competitions.
Learn something new — Develop skills and gain a deeper understanding of ski racing.
Meet your ski community — Work alongside parents, coaches, athletes and fellow volunteers.

Becoming an official is a great way to understand ski racing, get involved in your athlete’s experience, and help build the next generation of officials in Alaska.

Ski racing in Alaska is built on community. Every race depends on a team of people working together to create a safe, fair, and fun experience for athletes. — officials, parents, coaches, volunteers and race-day crews.

You can be part of that team.

Officials are at the heart of that effort. They help make it possible for athletes to test themselves, build confidence and resilience, and pursue their goals—from a first Town League race to a championship start.
